What it Takes to Become a Nurse

Thinking about a career in nursing? There’s actually a variety of nursing jobs out there to explore. When deciding your path, you’ll have to take into consideration how long you want to be in school,  the specific areas of practice you wish to explore, potential specialization in a particular medical field, the level of leadership you aim to attain, and more.

 

Certified Nursing Aid (CNA)

Time in School: Approximately 6 Months

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) observe and record patients’ vital signs and conditions, providing essential support to registered nurses and healthcare professionals in skilled nursing facilities, where they assist in delivering direct patient care.

 

License Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Provide assistance and support to individuals recovering from illness, injury, or disability in various settings like hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private residences, and group homes. Often work under the supervision of a registered nurse, requiring proper licensing.

Time in School: Approximately 2 years

 

Registered Nurse (RN)

Registered nurses (RNs) deliver patient care by assessing and monitoring their condition, collaborating with physicians during procedures, and administering prescribed treatments. They conduct diagnostic tests, operate medical equipment, and provide patient education on post-treatment care.

Time in School: Approximately 4 years
